Thank you. This is a great piece to get a sense of the development of Mandarin immersion. How important it is to be aware of and respect different group of people and their different need? If only we have this level of analysis in other social issue we would have much more productive civil discourse.

On my part I'd like to add a little perspective. If the Chinese education method is so good in fostering achievement why don't we just emulate them or just send our children to schools in China? Having been brought up in a Chinese school myself I want to let people know we also have concern of our own. First and foremost is the concern on inadequate English skill. Beyond this, Chinese community are also very aware of the limitation of memorization and drilling in education. Their kid may do well in examinations, but they often have problem adapting their skill in a new situation to solve a different problem. Growing up in a structured environment also make them more passive and feel disadvantaged compare to their more creative and assertive Western counterpart.

For this reason, some privileged parents may send their kid to the West for education to escape the so call "feeding duck" education system and to better prepare them for the 21st century workplace. What irony this is? Clearly there is no panacea.

It's sad that such great program is cut when everyone realizes this becomes even more important to learn Mandarin. For those who will miss their Mandarin Chinese classes and teachers, they can watch Mandarin Chinese dubbed movies at home and continue learning Mandarin Chinese more efficiently! They can order from http://www.ChineseDubbed.com ...

Be creative! You can certainly learn Mandarin Chinese outside of your classroom, and inexpensively, without the funding from your school.

Could well, I suppose. I'm more aural, so I like Pimsleur audio course, but I've only used it for Spanish, not Mandarin. And as reading and writing characters are a huge part of what we want to be able to engage with our kids with, it's probably not a bad way to go about it. I think it's much more suited to adult learning styles.
