San Francisco Unifed Mandarin standards

At the tours for the Chinese Language Conference in San Francisco last week, Wendy Cheong, with the San Francisco Unified School District’s Multilingual and World Languages department shared the current SFUSD standards for Mandarin immersion students. She has kindly made them available to parents as well.

Please note that these are works-in-progress. As our program matures (we’re only up to 4th grade now) and as what works and what doesn’t work for our student body at Starr King and Jose Ortega Elementary Schools becomes clear, these too, will change. But here’s a snapshot in time which might be helpful to parents in the Mandarin program in San Francisco as well as other programs elsewhere.

We’d like to encourage other districts or parents to send their standards, so we can start to see the commonalities.

    Hi-

    My family may be relocated to the Palo Alto and we are interested in the Chinese Immersion program for our 3 children (ages 7,8,9). All of our children currently attend a Chinese School Program run by the Chinese community in Metro Detroit and they can all read, write and speak some Mandarin.

    Can you please let me know how I find out about the programs and how to apply to them for the fall?

      The Mandarin Immersion program at Ohlone in Palo Alto is very popular “choice” (magnet) program. It is small, with a number of seats equivalent to one classroom per grade, although it is actually implemented as split grade classrooms. First you must register for your regular neighborhood school before you can apply for the choice lottery. In the upper grades, incoming students would be required to test at grade level for Mandarin language proficiency. Here are the steps to apply for the Ohlone immersion program:
